What is needed to root the HTC Desire 510?

In order to root the HTC Desire 510 you will need the following.

  • The HTC Desire 510 you wish to root
  • A PC

Step 1 – Set up the Android SDK environment on your PC

Before you can run the rooting tools on your PC to root the HTC Desire 510 you must first set up the Android development environment correctly.

Please also remember to download the correct USB drivers for the HTC Desire also so that it is recognised by your PC when you plug it in.

We show you how to set up the Android SDK and download the correct USB drivers for your device here.

Step 2 – Unlock the bootloader of the HTC Desire 510

In order to root the phone you first must unlock the bootloader of the HTC Desire 510.

To do this you need to visit the HTC website which is located here.  Follow the steps to unlock the bootloader and, when you have done that successfully please proceed to the next step.

Step 3 – Download TWRP recovery

In order to install SuperSU and root the phone you must first install the popular TWRP  recovery environment.  You can download it from here.  Once it has been downloaded extract to the Android SDK folder you have already installed (where the ADB file is found).

After extraction rename the file so that it is called recovery.img.

Step 4 – Root the HTC Desire 510

Now that you have set up the Android SDK environment, unlocked the HTC Desire 510 bootloader and downloaded the TWRP zip file we are ready to root the phone.

The second thing you must do is put the HTC Desire 510 in to Fastboot mode.

  1. Make sure the HTC Desire 510 is turned off completely.
  2. Hold down the volume down button and the power button together.
  3. The HTC Desire 510 will boot in to fastboot mode.
  4. Using the volume buttons make sure Fastboot is selected.
  5. Connect the HTC Desire 510 to your PC.
  6. Open up a command prompt window and navigate to your Android SDK installation folder where you can find Fastboot and the TWRP zip file from step 3.
  7. Type the following:

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

  1. TWRP will be flashed to the HTC Desire 510.

Step 5 – Install SuperSU

Once TWRP has been flashed to the HTC Desire 510 restart the phone.  Make sure that the HTC Desire 510 is connected to your PC and copy the downloaded SuperSU zip file from here to the SD card of the phone (e.g. the Downloads folder).

You now need to boot the phone in to recovery mode.

  1. Make sure the HTC Desire 510 is powered off completely.
  2. Hold down the volume down button and the power button.
  3. The HTC Desire will boot in to recovery mode (TWRP).
  4. Select the ‘Install zip from SD card’ option and browse to the SuperSU zip file you placed on the SD card of the phone.
  5. Flash the zip file to the phone.
  6. Once done restart the phone.

You will now see the SuperSU icon on the phone meaning that you have successfully rooted the HTC Desire 510.

The bootloader doesn’t need to be unlocked?

    1. FlexiSPYBlog Avatar

      Hello Lafinjack.

When it comes to rooting HTC models most do require the bootloader to be unlocked first.

We covered that in an article here:

tell me how to open recovery mode in htc desire 510 after unlocking bootloader? In my phone only HBOOT,RAMDUMP,REBOOT,REBOOT FASTBOOT,POWERDOWN!

    1. FlexiSPYBlog Avatar

      Hello Madican.

Please follow the guide. You must install a custom recovery on to the device and you then boot in to recovery mode (the custom recovery you just installed) and you use that to root the device by flashing the SuperSU zip file to the device which you should have copied on to the device from your PC.

      Thanks for contacting us

I am having trouble with the final step. Do i select recovery in the boot menu? I have flashed the recovery successfully but i cannot figure out how to boot in recovery mode.

*edit* i have solved this. i did have to select recovery in the boot menu. Admins, please add that step to the list. it does not automatically start in recovery mode, you have to get there from the boot menu.

THANK YOU I HAVE ROOTED THIS SHIZZZZZZ

when i put fastboot flash recovery recovery.img it says sending ‘recovery’ (0 KB)…

    FAILED (remote failure)

    finished. total time: 0.005s

Make sure the device is in fastboot mode, and make sure the Android SDK is instaleld on your pc.

Also make sure that the recovery img is in the same folder as fastboot is on your pc.

then please try running through the guide again.

  20. FlexiSPYBlog Avatar

You need to disconnect it from the PC.

  21. FlexiSPYBlog Avatar

You could give it a try, but doing so is at your own risk.

  22. FlexiSPYBlog Avatar

    Hi Hans,

please make sure you have usb debugging enabled as well as the Android SDK installed on the PC to get fastboot.exe

This, along with the steps in our guide should show you the path towards root! 🙂

  23. FlexiSPYBlog Avatar

    Hi Shawn,

Depending on the device, rooting may require a full factory reset first. However, if we don’t mention this in the guide then you can root without a factory reset- but always remember to make a full backup of the phone before attempting to root just in case. Rooting will also void your HTC warranty so bear that in mind as well.

  24. FlexiSPYBlog Avatar

Please make sure that you have the recovery image file in the same folder as fast boot and that it has the correct name of recovery.IMG. Then, try again.
